Quality record
SmartName is an AI naming service that promises a written case for every name and delivery in minutes. This page shows whether those promises hold, using the records of every order generated during development, and explains how each number was gathered. It also lists the things we cannot promise.
The record so far: English edition (measured September 2026)
Plus the Japanese edition's development record, on the same pipeline: 44 orders, 590 names, 100% with a case, 241 distinct directions (August 2026).
What we promise, and what the record shows
| Promise | Record | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Every name comes with a written case | English edition: 200 of 200 names delivered with a case. Japanese edition: 590 of 590 | Kept |
| Names are spread across genuinely different directions | English edition: 100 distinct directions across 20 Light orders (5 per order, none repeated within an order). Japanese edition: 241 across 44 orders (average 5.5; more on larger plans) | Kept |
| Delivery in minutes (Light about 2, Standard about 5, Premium about 7) | English edition, September 2026: Light 32 to 44 seconds of generation across 20 orders (41 seconds on the live system); Standard 105 seconds on the live system (25 names in 10 directions, one order so far). Premium has not yet been run in English; on the Japanese edition, same pipeline, it took 408 seconds | Kept (Light and Standard measured; Premium measured on the Japanese edition) |
| The case is about 150 words | English edition, 200 names: average 149.9 words (target 110 to 170) | Kept |
| Every name comes with its etymology | 161 of 200 English names delivered with an etymology. The rule became "every name" on 24 September 2026; the 39 without were generated before that, when plain-English names were left blank by design | Kept since 24 September |
| We say which AI wrote it | Light: Claude Opus 5.5. Standard and Premium: Claude Fable 5.1 (switches automatically when a newer version passes our tests) | Shown live |
Things we want to say plainly
The 20 English orders are test briefs we wrote and ran in September 2026 (19 on our development server and 1 on the live system, all on the Light plan), and the 44 Japanese orders are the test runs made while building the service in August. Nothing was excluded for being a poor result. The system, the checks and the delivery pipeline are the same for both editions. As real English-edition orders accumulate, the figures here will be replaced by those (never including any customer's business details or names).
The AI is instructed to write a case of roughly 150 words for every name. In practice, the length varies with the name: a coined word with a layered meaning may run longer, a plain two-word name shorter. What we do guarantee is that every name has a case; if one comes back missing, the system writes it again before delivering.
SmartName delivers candidates and the reasoning behind them. It does not tell you whether a name can be registered or whether it infringes someone else's rights. Before committing, search the USPTO, the UK IPO, CIPO, IP Australia or your national office, and your local company register. Our brand-collision check removes names identical to well-known brands, but it is not a legal search.
How the numbers were gathered
For the record to mean anything, the method has to be visible too.
- Which orders (English): all 20 English-edition orders generated on 23 and 24 September 2026: 19 test briefs on our development server (coffee shop, bakery, restaurant, salon, cleaning, landscaping, photography, consulting, clothing, app, gym, pet care, dental, real estate and four more) and 1 order on the live system. All Light plan. Nothing was excluded.
- Which orders (Japanese): all 44 orders generated between 18 and 20 August 2026 during development.
- Written case and etymology: a name counts only if the delivered record contains the case (or the etymology) for that name, counted by machine from the stored results, not by reading the screen.
- Word count: whitespace-separated words in the delivered case, averaged over all 200 English names.
- Delivery time: generation time is measured from the moment the order was picked up to the moment the names were stored, from the order records. On the live system the questionnaire is picked up within a minute of submission, so the customer's wait is the generation time plus up to one minute.
- Directions: the direction labels the AI designed for each order, counted after removing duplicates within each order.
Where the direction comes from (statistics of real names)
Since August 2026, the direction of every order has been set only after counting the real business names in the client's trade. For the English edition, the source is a live set of over 900,000 real business names in English-speaking countries: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and Ireland, drawn from map data (the name on the sign, with each distinct business counted once).
| Source | Coverage | What it tells us |
|---|---|---|
| Map data: business names in English-speaking countries | Over 900,000 distinct names across the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Ireland | How names in a given trade are actually built: word count, whether the trade word comes first or last, which words are common and which are rising, whether names are descriptive, place-based, personal or coined |
| Public company registers (with registration year) | UK Companies House, several US state registers, and others | How company-name structure in a trade has shifted by year of registration; used as context alongside the map data |
For every order, the system pulls the names in that trade from this set and counts them fresh. The counts set the directions, so the structure of the delivered names matches what customers in that trade already recognise. Your own preferences always lead: if your brief asks for something the market does not usually do, we follow your brief and add one direction that shows the common form, so you can see it and decide.
The safeguards behind every delivery
- A missing case is rewritten, never shipped. If any name comes back without its case, the system generates it again automatically. If the set is still incomplete after that, it is reported as an error rather than delivered half-done.
- Your rules are enforced by a program. Avoid-words, must-words and competitors from your brief are checked mechanically at the selection stage, and any name that fails is dropped before you see it.
- Offensive meanings are screened in seven languages. Every candidate is checked for embarrassing or offensive meanings before selection, so a name that works in English does not fail elsewhere.
- Well-known brands are excluded. Candidates identical to well-known brand names are removed. This is a courtesy screen, not a trademark search.
- Members never receive the same name twice. For logged-in members, later orders avoid every name already delivered.
